Hyatt Ziva wedding. Lucy and Alex, bohemian Hyatt wedding.

Lucy and Alex, modern love story, or how bride from Ohio and groom from Georgia whipped up breathtaking destination wedding at Hyatt Ziva Cap Cana in Dominican Republic.

Even in early stages of the planning process, exchanging emails with Lucy and Alex we knew they are our kind of people. They wanted their own story told with a special touch. Photos that are more than the ordinary ones. Unique angles and creative photos are our ‘love language’ so, it was an instant ‘click’.

I promise you quite a few giggles and couple of goosebumps if you read their full love story, you can thank me later for making your day bright and shiny! (Comments are allowed on this post).

Lucy and Alex met like many modern couples do… online! Their first date was Lucy’s first EVER online date… and it was Alex’s last. However, that’s where the “normal” part of the evening ended. After the initial “wow” of seeing each other in person, they cloistered themselves in a dimly lit Belgian beer bar sharing secrets and stories. With some people you have to build trust, but they both felt they could instantly be open and vulnerable with one another. Lucy was drawn to Alex’s devil-may-care attitude. Alex was drawn to Lucy’s adventurous spirit. The two ended the evening smooching on the steps of the historic Decatur courthouse (the same place Alex would propose two years later). A passerby loudly said “don’t mind me”, and Alex and Lucy gladly complied.

So, after such first date, the proposal couldn’t be lacking romance. Their first date and proposal mirrored one another, both happened on the courthouse steps in downtown Decatur, GA, USA. Alex proposed on November 14th 2020, exactly one year before the wedding date, almost to the hour. For the proposal, Alex suggested grabbing beers at the same pub where the they shared first date. Afterward, they visited the courthouse steps, as they usually do when they’re in the area. Lucy was looking up at the building commenting on the way the structure looked in the late afternoon sunlight, and when she turned to look at Alex, he was down on one knee.

With Lucy’s family living in Ohio and Alex’s living in Georgia, they knew the wedding would be a destination for at least half of the guests. So, they decided to make it a destination for everybody in the beautiful DR. With two goals on mind: that everybody has a fantastic vacation and celebration, and that they get married!

For their wedding venue in Dominican Republic, they choose Hyatt Ziva Cap Cana, an amazing all-inclusive resort on the beautiful Juanillo Beach.

The wedding decor theme was tropical bohemian, with lots of wood grain and handmade artisanal decor. There were sea glass place settings, custom wooden table numbers and cake topper, tropical print table cards, welcome notes, and invitations. Palm fronds and other tropical plant leaves were recurring motif. Keen observers may also have noticed couple’s two cats, Little Buddy and Gus, represented on custom cocktail sign. Tropical local flowers embellished ceremony arch, bridal bouquet, groom’s boutonnière, and reception centerpieces. The wedding colors were dusky blue and deep teal, drawing inspiration from the surrounding.

Here is how they replay on how they choose their wedding day outfits:

Lucy: I adore lace and was thrilled when I found a lace pattern that was fun and unique. I knew I wanted a fitted mermaid silhouette to add a little sass to the overall look, so it was a whole moment when I found my dress and tried it on to find that it fit like a glove! My Maid of Honor made the suggestion of adding off the shoulder sleeves (something I associate with a romantic, beachy wedding), and the slight sparkle in the veil was irresistible. Finally, I was inspired by the opera Carmen to add a flower to my hair, because why not! The result is a look that is timeless and screams “tropical beach wedding.”

Alex: I knew I wanted to have a dusky blue suit because the color is evocative of the ocean, and also looks good on me. I wanted something that would “pop” against the sand especially. The rest of the look was about clean details: an open white collar because ties are too stuffy for the beach, crisp white pocket square, and cognac leather to contrast with the blue and mirror the brown wood hues in the wedding decor.

For the wedding party we went for relaxed formal. A simple look that would be comfortable, but also turn some heads with stylish flair. Much like Alex’s suit, the dusky blue, deep teal, and warm browns were meant to mirror natural colors around us.

They told us that music played a large role on their wedding day. There were songs meaningful for them as a couple but also songs that had significance between them and their loved ones. It was the kind of music where a song comes on and you lock eyes with a friend across the room and share an “Oh YEAH!” moment. As the bride and the groom, their favorite part of the day was pausing at different moments and seeing all the people we love most having the time of their lives. Whether it was laughing, dancing, enjoying great food or drinks, there wasn’t a single person who wasn’t perfectly happy.

The most anticipated moment of the wedding day was when they first look at each other down the aisle. ”It was a long day of getting ready and attending to final details, but we both knew where it would lead, and the excitement of seeing each other for the first time was electric.”

Here is their advice for future couples planning their wedding:

Most importantly, accept that not everything will go perfectly and be ready and excited to go with the flow. Weddings are about the energy you bring, and if you are determined to have a great time no matter what, then you will have a great time no matter what! Once you have that mindset, trust your gut and choose people you trust to take care of the details that are most important to you and then give them the creative freedom to do their thing. This extends to photography, videography, etc. but also your wedding party as well.

Yajaira and Salvador met at, as they say, tender ages of 18 and 19 through a family friend in 2009. They’ve welcome daughter into the world in 2011 and it’s been a party of 3 of them ever since.

“I am not keen on big elaborate-put the attention on only me situations”, Yajaira told us, “and although he had planned a huge proposal, he soon realized after a bedside conversation that it was not going to work for me. He took those hints to heart and went back to planning a super intimate at home proposal that included our daughter and her own ring.”

Since they have always dreamt about having a destination wedding, this gorgeous couple chose a Dreams Macao Beach Resort as their wedding venue. Dreams Macao is recently built and the only family – friendly resort at breathtaking Macao Beach in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic. Located 40 minutes from Punta Cana International Airport an idyllic heaven where families and couples can relax and fully enjoy the true gem of the Caribbean, it is a no surprise why Yari and Sal chose this place to have their destination wedding.

The wedding was bohemian style with rose gold/neutral color palette. The bride and the groom went from pre-decorated plans that are completely customizable. They started with the “Ensoul” collection for the ceremony and the “Wonder rose” collection for the dinner tables. The featured greenery in the “Ensoul” collection was Pampas grass. It really tied the neutral tone together with the rose gold accents. The bride’s bouquet also featured dried palm leaves along with the pampas grass to give it that tropical feel without any bright colors.

The bride walked down the aisle in amazing Stella York dress that had a corset added to the back and a cape instead of a traditional veil. The groom had an “Emmanuel” suit in a shade of pink paired with shoes from Aldo that featured the word “Love” along the sides of each shoe.

Ceremony was set up on the rooftop overlooking the Ocean which give especially elegant note to this destination wedding. During the ceremony couple included a prayer which was truly emotional moment for Yajaira’s parents.

The bride wanted to incorporate her late sister into the wedding with small details. Her favorite movie growing up was The Beauty and the Beast so they had a custom “Be our guest” photo guest book made for our guest to sign and the Groom’s jewelry featured a rose. They also had a memorial frame with pictures of her.

The wedding reception was held in the garden and GCstar DJ did a fantastic job of keeping the party alive which is super difficult when the party size was under 20 people.

The most anticipated moments of the wedding day was the bride walking down the aisle and the groom dancing with their daughter.

Here are the advice for the future couples planning a wedding that Yari and Sal shared:

“Cutting costs are great but the one thing I refused to cut corners on was my photography and videography. Those memories last a lifetime and I did not want amateurs capturing those moments just to save a couple dollars. Also take a second to step back and just enjoy the moment; look around to see and appreciate those who truly love you and wanted to share your day with you. I promise once you do that you will realize all the stress was worth it!”

Kristen and Wade grew up in a small Delaware town. They’ve graduated together, shared many of the same friends, but they never dated. Not until later in life, when Wade wished Kristen a Happy Mother’s Day on Facebook, which ignited conversation that led to date at Timothy’s Newark Delaware.

Proposal was magical as Kristen explained. After asking all 4 of the kids for their blessing, Wade surprised Kristen with a proposal in their home.

They’ve chosen Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Punta Cana for their wedding venue. Bride and groom wanted the beauty of the beach to shine, it was pretty important for them to have white sand and blue water as a back drop, so, the ceremony took place at Isla Beach. Also, they incorporated a Glass ceremony into the wedding. The bride told us: “We went to a local glass blower with our kids and each selected a color of glass powder. The ceremony was setup like a traditional sand ceremony, but the kids poured the glass into a vessel. When we return home, we will go back to the glass blower and each child will make a glass piece with the mixed glass powder from the wedding.

We included our kids in every decision we made, they are the center of our lives and we wanted them to be a huge part of our wedding. They helped us pick the resort, their dresses, the cake flavors, menu, etc.

Another touching detail was that the bride took a quote from the last late grandmother’s letter to her and incorporated it to her wedding dress. Kristen’s Grandmother passed away years ago, but their special bond still remains true. It was a special way to keep her close to the heart.

Kristen and Wade said that the most anticipated moment of the entire Hard Rock Destination wedding day was the First Look. It was a special time for just the two of us, Wade explained. Kristen was late, which caused a few jokes. We are each other’s best friend and we always find peace when we are together. Seeing each other before the ceremony calmed down any nerves and allowed us to stop and appreciate the love we share.

The reception was set up at Harmonica Gazebo with the highlight of the evening – hired entertainment HOTS Production with the Black and White Crazy Hour. The bride and the groom kept them as a secret from their wedding guests, but once the entertainers were on the dance floor so was everybody else, and that is how it was the entire evening.

Here is the bride and the groom’s words of advice for the future couples planning a Hard Rock Destination Wedding:

“Let the location shine, it’s beautiful and stops you from stressing over all those irrelevant details! We knew no one would remember the color of the tablecloths but we can guarantee everyone will remember the Crazy Hour!

The only people who know things were not as you planned are the two of you! A few details were lost in translation with our coordinator, but it didn’t matter to any of our guests!

Stop a few times during your day, look around and appreciate everything that is going on!”
