Getting Ready Before the Ceremony

The day started the way most wedding days do, with Mallory and Chad getting ready separately while family and friends enjoyed the last few hours before the ceremony.

Mallory spent the morning with her bridesmaids, surrounded by laughter, excitement and a few happy nerves. While everyone was getting ready, we photographed the details she had chosen months earlier. The invitation suite, the jewelry, the rings and the bouquet all reflected the elegant but relaxed style they had planned. These photographs often become some of the most meaningful in a gallery, because they hold all the planning that happened long before the wedding day.

One of the quietest moments of the morning happened before anyone reached the beach. Mallory’s father saw her in her dress for the first time, and the reaction said everything. No speech, no posing, just a few seconds that we were glad to be in the room for.

At the same time, Chad was getting ready with his groomsmen. He looked calm, though after photographing hundreds of weddings we have learned that most grooms feel relaxed right up until the ceremony is about to begin. That is usually when it becomes real.

A Beach Ceremony at Jellyfish Restaurant

Mallory and Chad decided not to do a first look, so the ceremony would be the first time Chad saw her that day.

We always enjoy photographing weddings this way, because every groom reacts differently. Some laugh, some get emotional, some cannot stop smiling, and others simply stand there taking it in. When the music started and Mallory appeared at the end of the aisle, you could see exactly what Chad was feeling without him saying a word. It is one of those moments you cannot plan and cannot recreate.

Their ceremony took place on the sand in front of Jellyfish Restaurant, with the Caribbean Sea behind them and a floral arch framing the aisle. One reason this venue has become so popular for destination weddings in Punta Cana is that it does not need much to look beautiful. White sand, turquoise water and palm trees already do most of the work, which leaves couples free to keep the decor simple or go all out.

Surrounded by family and friends who had travelled from different places, Mallory and Chad exchanged their vows and shared their first kiss as a married couple.

Then came the hugs, the congratulations and the group photographs. Those few minutes after a ceremony are some of our favorites. Parents finally relax, friends cannot wait to celebrate, and the couple gets to enjoy the first moments of married life before the reception begins.

Sunset Wedding Portraits on Bávaro Beach

One thing we really appreciate about photographing at Jellyfish is that we do not have to take couples anywhere. The beach is a few steps from the ceremony and the reception, so while guests enjoy cocktail hour, we can spend twenty or thirty relaxed minutes with the couple and bring them straight back to the party.

That timing worked perfectly here. The nerves were gone, Mallory and Chad finally had a chance to slow down, and they could enjoy being together without watching a schedule.

We never want a portrait session to feel like an hour of posing. We gave them direction where it helped, and the rest of the time we simply let them walk, talk and laugh. Those natural moments usually become the photographs couples keep coming back to.

The late afternoon light on Bávaro Beach did the rest. As the sun drops, the light here softens in a way that flatters everyone, and with the calm water and the wide stretch of sand it gave us portraits that felt elegant without looking staged.

By the time we came back from the beach, guests had found their seats and the reception was about to begin.

The transition at this venue is genuinely easy. Because everything happens in one location, guests move from the beach ceremony to cocktail hour and into the reception without waiting around or travelling anywhere. You can feel that in the room all evening.

As the sun disappeared, the restaurant changed completely. Warm lights came on around the building, candles lit the tables, and the open-air space looked out over the same beach where the ceremony had taken place two hours earlier. During the day it feels like a tropical beach wedding. By night it becomes an elegant reception space without losing the relaxed Caribbean feel.

Dinner gave everyone a chance to catch up, enjoy the food and listen to the speeches. Some stories had the whole room laughing and others brought out tears. What we enjoy most during speeches is not the speech itself, it is watching everyone react. Parents looking proudly at their children, old friends laughing at stories only they understand, and the couple realising that the day they planned for so long is actually happening.

Then came the first dance, and it did not take long for the dance floor to fill up.

The Fire Show Everyone Gathered Around

One of the highlights of the evening was the fire show.

If you have never seen one at a Punta Cana wedding, it is always a crowd favorite. As soon as the performer stepped out, everyone gathered around. Phones came out, kids moved to the front, and for the next several minutes nobody looked anywhere else. It added something completely different to the evening, and it photographs beautifully against the dark beach and the string lights.

A Limbo Competition Nobody Planned

Just when everyone thought the entertainment was over, we pulled a roll of double-sided Velcro tape out of the camera bag and suggested a limbo competition.

It is a simple trick that always gets guests involved, and it works because it needs nothing but a strip of tape and two volunteers. What started as a bit of fun turned into a serious contest. Guests cheered each other on, celebrated every successful attempt and laughed every time someone finally touched the bar.

The best receptions are rarely the ones with the most detailed schedule. They are the ones where people feel comfortable enough to have fun, and this was one of those.

A Sparkler Exit to End the Night

Every wedding has its own ending, and this one could not have been better.

As the evening came to a close, family and friends gathered with sparklers to create a tunnel of light for the newlyweds. Everyone was laughing, trying to keep their sparklers lit, ready for one last celebration before saying goodnight.

Mallory and Chad walked through it surrounded by the people who had travelled so far to be there. A simple moment, and the perfect way to finish a day full of real emotion and laughter.

Looking back through their gallery, it is hard to pick a favorite part. Chad’s face as Mallory walked down the aisle. The quiet portraits on Bávaro Beach. The speeches that had everyone laughing and crying within a minute of each other. The reception that kept everyone dancing until the end.

Every part of it matters, because every part tells a piece of their story. That is what we love most about wedding photography. A gallery is not a collection of pretty images. It is the story of one of the most important days in two people’s lives, told through moments as they actually happened.

What We Have Learned Photographing Weddings at Jellyfish

After many weddings at this venue, a few things come up again and again. If you are planning your own day here, these are worth knowing.

• Everything happens in one place. The ceremony, cocktail hour, portraits and reception are all within a short walk, so you spend the day with your guests instead of travelling between locations.
• Cocktail hour is the best window for portraits. Twenty to thirty minutes on the beach is usually enough, and your guests stay entertained while you are away.

• A late afternoon ceremony gives you the best light. Theirs began at 4:30 pm, which left plenty of time for portraits in soft light before sunset.
• The venue changes character after dark. What feels like a barefoot beach wedding in the afternoon becomes a warm, lit, open-air restaurant in the evening.
• Beach entertainment is easy to add here. A fire show works especially well because there is open sand right beside the reception.
